Grease paint, glam and gore were the subjects on hand during a special monster make-up portion of the Creature Feature program held July 8th at the Royal Oak Library.
Seventeen youths intent fully listened to Special Effects and Make Up Artist Dave Watson of Eastpointe give directions on how to create monster looks with basic foundation, shadowing and other simple make-up facial techniques. Watson highlighted these important elements both verbally and visually which appealed to students who eagerly awaited their own opportunity to personally transform from guy or girl to “ghoul”.
“It was fun!” said Xavier Satchell of Royal Oak.
Christine Deneweth who also resides in Royal Oak echoed Satchell’s sentiments and noted that she liked the presentation Watson gave.
“He was awesome. He was really nice plus he had an awesome fashion sense,” Deneweth said. She also added that her favorite part was actually trying to accomplish the effects Watson created in his demonstration.
“It’s really fun to make yourself up as a monster,” Deneweth said. “It’s something you don’t normally get to do.”
Young Adult and Youth Services Librarian Mary Karshner who organized the program said she was very pleased with the outcome of the two-hour session for many reasons.
“It was marvelous. They had a great time,” Karshner said. “He did a very nice job and held their attention in such a way that they were committed to doing what he was doing yet at the same time capturing their own individual and unique effects.”
Watson said he enjoyed fielding intelligent questions from the kids and remarked he was very impressed on just how close they paid attention to the make-up steps that were discussed.
“I was amazed with the interest and dedication they displayed especially for such a young age group,” Watson said. “Certain students definitely had done their research prior to the class which actually was our main focus for the library curriculum.”
While Watson does intend to conduct future seminars, he says that his interest to teach special effects and make-up is not just confined to a classroom setting. Infact, he would like to share his craft with any individual that has a great desire to enter into the realm of make-up and/or special effects artistry. In an effort to accomplish this, Watson has collaborated with Southfield, MI based Motor D Films and produced an 80-minute tutorial DVD entitled “Methods of the Macabre- Volume One”.
“It was hard for me being self-taught to find all the avenues of the craft readily available in one product. I have had many trials and tribulations over the years honing my technique because of this,” Watson said. “Hopefully this DVD can put a struggling novice on the right path.”
